Bringing deaf and hearing worlds together
Visual Effects is a multi-faceted organization. The non-profit organization began as a performing arts company in 1991 with six deaf actors and four hearing ones who have since presented hundreds of performances incorporating ASL, music, dance, and drama throughout the southeast in churches, schools and theaters.
Visual Effects also provides seminars on deaf awareness, facilitates a network for locating interpreters, consults other organizations in putting on drama-sign-dance workshops and assists in finding or providing sign language classes in the community.
A recent and highly successful endeavor for Visual Effects has been Camp DOVE (Deaf Outreach through Visual Effects). Established in 1998, Camp DOVE offers a week-long overnight camping opportunity for deaf children to meet their special communication needs in an environment of fellowship and fun.
Visual Effects also established a community-wide Christian non-denominational Bible study in ASL from 2005-2008. Since 1998, Visual Effects has provided on-going ASL classes for the community at a minimal charge (the classes are free to parents of deaf children). This has been a cooperative project with the Athens Sertoma Club. Visual Effects has also conducted numerous workshops on such things as deaf etiquette and basic ASL for area businesses, organizations, colleges and churches.
About Camp DOVE
Camp D.O.V.E. (Deaf Outreach through Visual Effects) is a retreat that provides an opportunity for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth to share a unique camping experience in a Christian environment.
Camp D.O.V.E.’s program offers the opportunity for all campers ages 8 to Senior in high school, deaf and hearing alike, to experience fun and fellowship in the common bonds of ASL (American Sign Language). Campers enjoy a variety of activities like swimming, karate, dance, magic, arts and crafts, talent shows and games.
When it comes to providing your children with fun memories, camping ranks up there as one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences. As your children grow into teens and then move into adulthood, they will reflect on camp memories and consider them to be some of the finest times in their lives. They will fondly remember fun activities such as swimming, skits, art, music, dance, karate, games and campfires. They will smile as they treasure new friendships that could last a lifetime. Camp will be important to them, a crucial part of their childhood and something they will always treasure. We are looking forward to seeing old campers again this year and meeting new campers, too. We can’t wait!!!!
